A Legacy of Love for Alexandria Zoo
Friends of the Alexandria Zoo is a 501c(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing Alexandria Zoo.
Since our founding, we have been the passionate community of advocates, volunteers, and donors dedicated to ensuring that Alexandria Zoo remains a treasured landmark for central Louisiana, a center for conservation, and a place where families create lifelong memories.
We believe the Zoo is a vital community resource for education, conservation, and family fun. Our mission is to work in partnership with the Zoo to ensure its continued growth and success.
Our Story
Our story began with a small group of dedicated citizens appointed by City Commissioner O'Hearn Mathews in 1970 who saw the immense potential of our local zoo. FOTAZ, formed in 1971, immediately began efforts to improve the quality of the animal care and facilities.
This group believed that with community support, the Alexandria Zoo could grow into a world-class facility, providing exceptional animal care and inspiring a love for the natural world in every visitor. Decades later, that belief remains the cornerstone of our organization.
How do we support the Alexandria Zoo?
We work to provide financial and volunteer support for the Zoo's development, operation, and conservation programs, enhancing its ability to serve as a premier educational and recreational resource for our region.
Fundraising for a Thriving Zoo
FOTAZ provides supplimental financial support for Alexandria Zoo. Many of the zoo's most cherished habitats and features were made possible in part through FOTAZ-led capital campaigns and community donations. We raise critical funds for new exhibits, habitat renovations, and improved guest amenities.
Supporting Conservation and Education
We are passionate about protecting wildlife for future generations. FOTAZ provides funding for the zoo's vital conservation initiatives, both locally and globally. We also support educational programming that inspires tens of thousands of children and adults each year to become stewards of our planet.
Enriching Animal Welfare
The health and happiness of the animals are paramount. Our support helps provide essential enrichment items and advanced veterinary equipment, ensuring every animal at the Alexandria Zoo receives the best possible care.
Hosting Community Events
We are the driving force behind some of the Zoo's most popular community events, including the beloved Zoo Boo and Holiday Light Safari. These events not only bring joy to our community but also raise essential funds to support the Zoo's mission.
