DocentsThis diverse group of men and women VOLUNTEERS strengthen our work force at the Zoo. They make it possible to present special programs and activities to the community. Print the Docent Application. The Alexandria Zoo accepts applications in January for the VOLUNTEER TRAINING PROGRAM. Training sessions are held in February and March at the Zoo.
A Docent is defined as a volunteer lecturer or tour guide, but Alexandria Zoo Docents perform so many different tasks to help the Zoo! They are adults who offer volunteer service in the areas of education, animal care, zoo keeper assistance, grounds maintenance and landscaping, construction, summer camp, public relations, office work, and many other activities. Plus all activities and special events like Zoo Day, Zoo Boo and Summer Safari Camp also depend on volunteer assistance. Training sessions are held only in February and March, however, you are welcome to call at any time to be added to the mailing list to receive information for upcoming training dates and times. After training is complete, each volunteer has committed to work an average of 8 hours per month and to attend a planning meeting on the second Tuesday of each month. Applicants are asked to pay a $25 volunteer fee at the beginning of training. After completion of the training sessions, each volunteer should join FOTAZ at their chosen lead. In return, they will receive free admission to the Alexandria Zoo plus free or reduced admission to over 100 zoos and aquariums nationwide. Other benefits include discounts in the gift shop and on education programs for children, newsletters and other mailings that advertise zoo activities and events, as well as an invitation to "members only" activities. They will also have the opportunity to attend "volunteer reward trips" to other zoos and aquariums. Docents are issued a uniform shirt and nametag, as well as training materials and a notebook. Docents must supply their own khaki pants or walking shorts as part of their uniform. One of the most important perks is that volunteers get to experience the zoo up close and make many new friends while you're helping the Zoo staff and community.
