Mardi Gras Party

Date: Saturday, February 14, 2015

They all ask for you at the Alexandria Zoo! Following the Children's Parade, celebrate Mardi Gras at the Alexandria Zoo.

Enjoy sweet treats by Atwood's Bakery.

Boogie woogie to World War II-era musical classics performed by the National WWII Museum's charming vocal trio, the Victory Belles, from 2 pm - 3 pm.

Find your new furry best friend with the help of Alexandria Animal Shelter. The Adoption Bus will be at the Zoo with dogs available for adoption.

Live Music
Gather your family and friends, pack your picnic basket and get down with your favorite roots music at Alexandria Zoo's newest event... ZOO GRASS.

The Cat Head Biscuit Boys of Lafayette and Cenla's own Reverend Charley's Patent Medicine Show will be playing some great folk, bluegrass, Cajun and country music. Walk the Zoo while listening to the music or sit back and enjoy a relaxing evening with family and friends.

Kids Activities
With face painting and over a dozen back yard games, there will be plenty for the kids to enjoy. Play corn hole, horseshoes, ring toss, backyard bowling, and ladder ball to name a few.

Food & Beverages
You are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy at the Festival Plaza. No outside beverages allowed. Absolutely no outside alcohol permitted. Beer, soft drinks and concession items will be available for sale (cash only).

Pop Open a Cold One for Conservation
Proceeds from the beer sales will go towards a conservation project for a grasslands animal.

Purchase tickets ahead of time at the Zoo Gift Shop or at the gate the night of the event.

Water Play Day

Prepare to enter the wet zone! Families can make a splash with water slides, sprinklers, bubbles, water games, music and more. Discover how we can preserve our oceans and rivers.

Kids wear your swimsuits and prepare to get wet! Shoes or flip flops must be worn inside the Zoo.

Water slides and other activities are free with admission.

Les Fest
Jammin' in the Jungle

Zoo Boo

For over 30 years, Alexandria Zoo has provided a fun, safe Halloween experience for families. Zoo Boo offers 3 nights of SPOOKTACULAR, SCARE-FREE fun!

Enjoy sweets and treats along the traditional trick-or-treat trail through the Zoo with a stop at the Festival Plaza to enjoy HALLOWEEN ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS. Treat bags are provided.

Encounter lots of familiar characters along decorated trails as kids 12 years and younger trick-or-treat their way through the Zoo.

Photo Ops
Capture all the memories at different photo ops throughout the Zoo including Ghostbusters, Super Heroes, the annual Pumpkin Patch, and more.

Live Music
Enjoy family-friendly live performances before you enter Zoo Boo and as you exit.

Hay Maze & Mountain
It's all fun down on the farm. Navigate the hay maze, scale the hay mountain, and take your picture on a tractor.

Friendly Witches Ball
Rock the night away on stage at the Friendly Witches Ball and dance along with the music.

Noodle Nonsense
Make your way through the House of Noodle Nonsense.

Puppet Wall
Knock, Knock, Who's There? Discover all the friendly creatures awaiting visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the activities at Zoo Boo?
Zoo Boo is one long trick-or-treat trail through the Zoo. Midway through the trail, there is an interactive carnival at the Festival Plaza with kid-friendly activities and music. Visitors can enjoy the area and activities in any order and at their own pace. When they are ready, they can rejoin the trick-or-treat trail, which leads through the rest of the Zoo to the exit.

Do kids have to wear costumes?
Kids ages 12 and under are encouraged to wear costumes but it is not a requirement.

Can adults wear costumes?
Adults may wear family-friendly (non-scary) costumes. Since this event is geared toward families with young children, adults ages 18 and older may not wear masks that cover the face.

Can adults trick-or-treat?
Trick-or-treating is reserved for kids ages 12 and younger. There are lots of decorations, photo ops, music, and activities for all ages to enjoy.

Should children bring their own trick-or-treat bags?
The Zoo provides treat bags.

Do FOTAZ Members get in free?
No. Zoo Boo is the Zoo's largest fundraising event. FOTAZ memberships and other zoo passes are not accepted during Zoo Boo.

Is there a scary trail?
There is no longer a scary trail. Zoo Boo is a friendly, non-scary Halloween experience geared for families.

Will the animals be out at Zoo Boo?
While you may spot a few night owls during Zoo Boo, most of our residents will be off-exhibit to catch some zzz's.

Where can I park?
Parking is available in the Zoo's main parking lot on Masonic Drive. There is additional parking at the Youth Baseball Complex and down Babe Ruth Drive. Carpooling is encouraged.

Birthday Parties

Looking for a unique place to go wild on your birthday? At the Alexandria Zoo we welcome party animals of all ages.

Please note Birthday Parties cannot be scheduled on dates the Zoo holds special events. Please check our calendar.

Birthday Reservation Request

The Zoo offers three types of party packages:

Party Package 1

Self-guided Party at the Playground

These are available for any day of the week for children of any age.

Party Details

  • What's Included

The party includes admission for everyone, tables for the party, and a zoo souvenir from the Zoo Gift Shop for the birthday child.

  • Guest List

On the day of your party, payment is required when you arrive and check in at the Zoo office. You must provide the zoo office with a copy of your guest list (include first and last name of each guest). Anyone not included on your guest list will be charged full price when they enter the Zoo. The cashier will note the arrival of each guest.

Reservation

We ask that you submit a reservation form a minimum of one week in advance.

Party Dates and Times Available

  • 10 am - 12 pm
  • 12 pm - 2 pm
  • 2 pm - 4 pm

Parties can be scheduled any day of the week excluding days the Zoo hold special events.

Set-up & Clean-up

The host family is responsible for for set-up and clean-up. If your group fails to clean-up after them there will be an additional clean-up fee of $50.

If you have less than 15 guests, the fee is $7.50 per person for all individuals attending the party. This includes party guests, parents, siblings, and FOTAZ members of all ages. Group rates are available for 15 or more people. The group rate is $4.50 per person any age.

If you have less than 15 guests, the fee is $7.50 per person for all individuals attending the party. This includes party guests, parents, siblings, and FOTAZ members of all ages.   • Train
Train rides are $1.50 per person for ages one year and older. Discount rates ($1.00 per ticket) are available for purchases of 15 or more train tickets. You must purchase these discount train tickets all at once.
  • Fish Food
Fish food may be purchased separately.

  • Children must be supervised at all times on the playground equipment and while walking in the Zoo.
  • The playground is designed for ages 5-10.
  • The Zoo does not provide refreshments for parties.
  • No balloons, straws, pinatas, confetti, whistles (or other noise makers), or BBQ pits allowed.
  • NO SMOKING anywhere in the Zoo including the playground area.
  • Check with the Zoo office on games and activities planned.

Party Package 2

Self-guided Party in a Supervised Building

These are available on Saturdays for children of any age.

  • What's Included
The party includes access to the Activities Building for party guests, admission for everyone, wristbands for the guests, tables for the party, and a zoo souvenir for the birthday child.

On the day of your party, payment is required when you arrive and check in at the Zoo office. You must provide the zoo office with a copy of your guest list (include first and last name of each guest). Anyone not included on your guest list will be charged full price when they enter the Zoo. The cashier will note the arrival of each guest. As each guest arrives, they will receive an armband. This wristband will allow them admission into the education building. Without the wristband, they will be UNABLE to enter the building for the party.

  • There is a $50 nonrefundable deposit to hold the time and date for your group.

Volunteer-guided Party with an Educational Component

These are available on Saturdays. Birthday Child must be at least four years of age TURNING five.

This is a volunteer-guided party held in the Activities Building. A Docent (trained zoo volunteer) will run all activities for this party.

  • The zoo will provide drinks, plates, napkins, utensils, and decorations including table covers and party favors.
  • The zoo will set-up prior to the party and clean-up after the party.
  • 20 Custom Invitations for you to send out
  • Train ride, feeding the fish, a visit to an animal, and an education presentation you selected from our list.
The only item you need to bring for the party set up is the cake.
