African Experience

African Experience: Phase I

On September 27, 2004, a small portion of the new African Experience was unveiled. The large habitat built to house the zoo’s two African lions has incredible rock formations and a 17’ waterfall! The exhibit was developed by Zoo Administrator Leslie Whitt and the David L. Manwarren corporation of California and was constructed under the direction of Harris Tassin of Ewing Aquatech Pools. Upon entering this new area, visitors can also view dwarf crocodiles and African crested porcupines. The many cultural elements and details incorporated into this exhibit make it truly an experience.

On April 17, 2004, we opened two new exhibits in the African Experience! One of the zoo’s most famous residents, the Aldabra tortoise known as Big Al, was moved into his new exhibit, along with his new companions (Galapogos and Aldabra tortoises). Also, the "Venom Center" or African snake house was opened to the public for the first time.
