Snow Day

Posted 2.12.10
A layer of snow blanketed the Alexandria Zoo early Friday morning. While most of the animals stayed nestled in their heated dens as snow fell across Central Louisiana, a few of the zoo's creatures ventured out into their snowy habitats. The tigers and cougars, along with both species of wolves at the Zoo seemed to enjoy exploring and playing in the freshly fallen snow.

HOW DOES THE ZOO PREPARE FOR COLD WEATHER?
Zookeepers give the animals hay and put up heat lamps and special plastic tarps to keep the animals warm and cozy. Zoo staff members even track the temperatures throughout the day. When the temperature drops below a certain mark, some animals like the aldabra and Galapagos tortoises are kept inside in their heated enclosures. But even on cold days visitors can still see both of these magnificent species. Their indoor enclosures are designed to allow the public to peek in through the windows.
