RANGE:
Southern California, southwestern Arizona, to northwestern Mexico
HABITAT:
Rocky desert canyons, ridges, and hills, often near desert springs
DIET:
Wild - Small rodents and lizards
Zoo - Mice
DESCRIPTION:
Small, heavy-bodied snake with a small head that is not distinct from the neck and a blunt tail. Body is pale tan to gray with three deep chocolate brown to reddish brown stripes. Belly is white with occasional dark spots.
FACTS:
Docile; breeds well in captivity.
YOUNG:
Gives live birth to 1-13 young from mid August to early October
STATUS:
Not threatened, but are locally protected through most of range
