Types of Volunteers

Docent
Docents are adults who offer volunteer service in the areas of education, animal care, zoo keeper assistance, grounds maintenance and landscaping, construction, summer camp, public relations, office work, and many other activities. Plus all activities and special events like Party for the Planet, Zoo Boo and Summer Safari Camp also depend on volunteer assistance.

Applicants Should:

  • Be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Like people, especially children, as much as animals
  • Be a member of FOTAZ (Friends of the Alexandria Zoo)
  • Be willing to donate at least 60 hours of service throughout the year
  • Attend applicable training sessions (no make-up sessions are held)
  • Pay a $25 registration fee

Training

Alexandria Zoo only accepts volunteer applications in January and training sessions are held in February.
